Reliability and ease of use

iRobot Roomba scored more favorably on reliability (7.7 compared to 6.1) and ease of use (7.9 compared to 5.9) than Dyson. One respondent said of their Roomba robot vacuum, “It’s an easy-to-use, simple feature, low-end smart vacuum robot; however, that makes it desirable for a lot of people like me because it’s easier to use than complicated systems.”

Cleaning performance

Our survey found Roomba to have better cleaning efficiency among the brands (though our vacuum expert swears by her Dyson stick vacuum). A survey respondent who has a Roomba commented that it vacuums well and they prefer it to using a traditional vacuum.

Another said, “I have had the Roomba for more than five years, couldn’t be happier. I use it just about every other day — has never needed repairs. I am very satisfied. I wish I had another one.”

Likelihood to recommend

Even though there were clear preferences in some of the scoring categories, the overall likelihood to recommend was about even for our readers’ top two brands. Dyson secured a 7.3, while iRobot landed at 7.2. And, according to our in-house vacuum expert, both are solid brands worth adding to your cleaning arsenal.
