Google teases a big Gemini app revamp

Google keeps making small but useful improvements to the Gemini app for Android to improve the usability experience. Still, the app leaves a lot to be desired, especially given Gemini’s capabilities. Thankfully, Google knows the Gemini app — both on the web and on mobile — needs some work, and it’s actively working on it.

In response to a post on X about Gemini’s front end (app) not being as good as ChatGPT, Logan Kilpatrick — the lead product for Google AI Studio and Gemini API at Google — confirmed the company is making “huge investment” in Gemini App UX 2.0 right now.

The current Gemini app does not do justice to all its features. With a revamped interface, Google could surface Gemini’s impressive capabilities and make features for everyday use easier to access.

He also revealed that Google is working on a native Gemini app for macOS.

ChatGPT offers a native app for both Windows and Mac, making it easier to use. Plus, it enables advanced functionality, like native integration with apps like Notion, Terminal, and Apple Notes. In comparison, the only way to access Gemini on a PC is through a web browser. While that works, it leads to a clunkier, less polished experience than ChatGPT’s native app.

For example, it’s currently far easier to upload multiple files to ChatGPT on a Mac or Windows through the native app. With Gemini, you need to use a web browser, which slows down the overall process.

More importantly, as AI models begin offering agentic capabilities, a native app would help them work better with local files and integrate smoothly with other apps on your PC.

It seems the Gemini team at Google realizes this, which is why it’s working on a native Mac app. There’s no release timeline yet, but given the rapid pace at which Google is rolling out Gemini updates, the wait should not be long.

Google is also working on a native Google AI Studio app for iPhone and Android, dubbed Build Anything.

Based on the replies by Ammar Reshi, the lead product and design head of Google AI Studio, the app may still be a while away from launch. Still, if you use AI Studio heavily, a dedicated mobile app will let you continue your vibe coding sessions even on the go.
