Send to Kindle from Microsoft Word killed after less than three years

Send to Kindle from Microsoft Word, a feature that’s not even three years old, is being axed, according to some digging into Microsoft’s documentation.

As spotted by Good E-Reader, the service that allowed you to send documents straight from Microsoft Word to your Kindle is being discontinued. This will be a huge hit to those who might have used their Kindle to check through documents before finishing them off.

Another helpful Kindle feature left to die

Amazon

Send To Kindle from Microsoft Word has a very short history. It was introduced in April 2023, shortly after the release of the first generation of Kindle Scribe. In fact, it’s hard not to see the Kindle Scribe as being the best pairing with this particular feature, given its focus on productivity and ability to scrawl on documents.

Send to Kindle from Microsoft Word was a particularly interesting feature because it was so well done. We’ve all struggled with exporting documents and formatting flying out of position, but this feature kept all formatting in place with fixed layouts, so you didn’t lose out on your document as intended.

You needed a Microsoft 365 subscription to use it, but it’s likely most people using Word and not a free competitor had one of those anyway.

This comes at a time where Amazon has been fiddling quite a lot with Kindles and exactly what users can do with them. First, it killed the ability to download your ebooks to your desktop PC. Then came a closure of loopholes that allowed ebooks to be sent to whole domains. Then, it introduced a new, uncrackable DRM, which was promptly beaten. Er, then it decided to bring ebook downloads back again.

To say it was a tumultuous 2025 for the Kindle is understating it, and many Kindle owners have had enough, and have moved to some of the best e-readers that aren’t made by Amazon. In Amazon’s defense, it doesn’t look like this Send to Kindle change comes from them, and instead may have come from Microsoft.

Quite why Microsoft has decided to kill this feature off is unknown, but it’s possible it simply wasn’t being used by all that many people, so Microsoft saw no value in keeping it.

Whatever the reason for its death, Send to Kindle from Microsoft Word was an underappreciated king, and it will rest in peace in February 2026, when it sunsets for good.
