Google Phone app finally fixes that frustrating call rotation bug

If you’ve encountered your Android device’s screen awkwardly flip into landscape mode while you’re on a call, you’re not alone. This has been an issue for many for the last few months — since Google rolled out the Phone app’s Material 3 Expressive redesign to be specific.

Better late than never, Google is finally rolling out a fix for the issue.

Google is fixing the Phone app’s topsy-turvy call screen

With a portrait mode toggle

A fix for the issue was first spotted back in December, but it wasn’t available to all at the time. The fix, which introduced a new ‘Keep portrait mode on calls’ toggle, was limited to Version 202 beta of the Phone by Google app, and was later removed. This caused additional confusion for early beta testers. Now, the same toggle is starting to make its way to stable, as pointed out by the folks over at PiunikaWeb.

The tech giant highlighted the development in a support post, indicating that “you can now prevent your phone screen from rotating to landscape during calls.” Google also clarified that it “briefly” removed the feature for Version 202 beta to update it in response to community feedback.

Portrait is now the default

The tech giant highlighted that portrait mode for calls will now be the default, so you don’t really need to take any manual action to keep the feature active. You do have the option to turn off this setting and allow phone calls to rotate to landscape mode. To do so:

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap Menu (3 bars) > Settings > Display options.
  3. Turn off Keep portrait mode.

Although not a huge change by any means, the stable rollout of the toggle is a huge win for users that normally like to keep their device’s native setting on auto-rotate. The update is rolling out globally now.
