Donald Trump really wants Iceland. Sorry, Greenland. We think?
The president repeatedly confused the two at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, despite spending the majority of his time of late threatening to take ownership of Greenland (autonomous Danish territory) not Iceland (Nordic country).
“Dear Lord, he’s on an imperial conquest, and he can’t even remember what he wants to conquer,” responded Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night’s Late Show.
During his monologue, the host noted that Trump’s repeated Greenland-Iceland mix-up was pointed out by NewsNation White House correspondent Libbey Dean on X, to which White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded, “His written remarks referred to Greenland as a ‘piece of ice’ because that’s what it is. You’re the only one mixing anything up here.”
“That is some Grade-A Big Brother propaganda,” said Colbert. “As George Orwell wrote in 1984, ‘War is peace, freedom is slavery, Karoline Leavitt is a dumbass.'”
