YouTube’s annoying content unavailable error is its latest attempt at breaking ad blockers

January 23, 2026

Has YouTube been acting wonky for you over the past week? You’re not alone. I personally have been unable to play any videos on the first go on my Mac or Windows desktop, with all returning with a “This content isn’t available, try again later” message. Others have it worse, with some also seeing a “content not available in your country” message.

This follows a November 2025 bug that caused several key UI elements to go poof.

YouTube users report the disappearance of common features

Unclear if they’re UI changes or bugs

I have the issue on both Chrome and Firefox, but not on Safari. You want to know why the latter might be working fine? It’s likely because I don’t run an adblocker on Safari.

Heading to Reddit and searching for “content unavailable” on the r/YouTube subreddit will show you several user complaints posted within the week, with some stray reports dating back a few months, as also pointed out by PiunikaWeb.

As seen in the screenshot above, I tried to play the Android Police YouTube channel’s latest upload, ‘AI is stunting smartphone innovation,’ to no avail. Playing the same video on Safari worked just fine, which prompted me to try disabling my adblocker.

Without even needing to manually refresh the page, pausing uBlock automatically triggered the page to refresh, and the video in question automatically started playing.

YouTube hasn’t officially acknowledged the issue just yet, and if this is part of YouTube’s war against ad blockers, it might not acknoweldge it at all.

In my testing, if you do not want to pause your ad blocker, tapping the blue ‘Learn more’ button right underneath the error message, and then hitting the ‘back’ button returns you to the player and triggers the video to start playing immediately.

Other troubleshooting steps that worked for some and might or might not work for you include:

  • Refreshing the video until it starts playing.
  • Transitioning to a YouTube-specific ad blocker.
  • Switching your YouTube account.
  • Disabling your VPN.
