For the first time ever, Samsung’s Fold production targets are overtaking the Flip

For years now, clamshell foldables have clearly been more famous and ‘trendy’ than their book-style counterparts. This can largely be credited to the former’s ‘pocketable’ size, complete with a price tag that’s a little easier to digest.

The hype around the original 2004 Moto Razr, and the countless ads about it, has certainly helped cement clamshell foldables as the ultimate tech fashion accessory.

Many new foldables to choose from

Considering that flip foldables sell better, manufacturers like Samsung have always gone Flip first, while Fold takes a backseat, at least when it comes to production quantities. With 2026’s Samsung foldable lineup, this might change.

Industry insiders, via ETNews suggest a seismic shift. According to them, Samsung Electronics plans to produce around 3.5 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and 2.5 to 3 million units of the Flip 8.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7’s higher-than-expected demand could have had a role in swaying Samsung’s 2026 foldable production targets. Considering the manufacturing targets, we can certainly expect the Z Fold 8 to shine with new bells and whistles.

Samsung won’t be folding on this range

Samsung’s new foldables aren’t due until the second half of 2026. However, we’ve already heard some key information about them.

For starters, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to be more comfortable to hold than its predecessor. Early leaks have indicated that the device will weigh in at 200g, making it 15g lighter than the Z Fold 7. What’s surprising is that Samsung could achieve the lower device weight all while giving the device a bigger 5,000mAh cell.

Elsewhere, the device is also reported to boast a 50MP ultrawide camera, which is a big jump from the Z Fold 7’s 12MP sensor. Lastly, the South Korean tech giant might also be exploring the idea of bringing the S Pen stylus back to the Fold line. A top Samsung executive recently told ETNews that it was “researching and developing a thinner and more innovative S Pen technology,” which could make its way to the upcoming foldable.
