Despite Android’s Quick Settings tiles being around for quite some time and going through a number of changes, we’ll admit that it isn’t perfect. However, it can still manage to be a real game-changer if you tailor it to accommodate your daily flow. Some have even mastered it to make it their own ultimate control hub.
Of course, sometimes, it’s the apps behind the Quick Settings tiles themselves that can prevent a good experience, like VPN by Google delivering an extremely lackluster one that doesn’t really inform at all about what’s going on. Thankfully, that’s going to change, with 9to5Google reporting a Quick Settings tile update promising to show more.

The news outlet reports that the Quick Settings tile (2 x 1 size) for VPN by Google for Pixel devices should now keep users better informed about their connection. While the previous UI showed “VPN by Google” and nothing more, the new tile will show four new options: Connected, Paused, Connecting, and Can’t connect.
As you can imagine, being able to see this information at a glance should provide some relief, especially if you’re someone who frequently utilizes public hotspots or just wants to keep the connection secure. As 9to5Google notes, these statuses aren’t completely new, as they were already available in the VPN by Google app. It’s just now, you can see them in the Quick Settings tile.
Those curious about this change will want to grab the VPN by Google update, which comes in as version 2025.12.19.x. The news outlet also shares that just performing the update might not be enough, as there is a “server-side component” that needs to be activated. Per usual, you’ll want to keep an eye out for this change, as it is now rolling out.
Just as a heads-up, VPN by Google is an exclusive feature that’s available to Pixel owners. It comes at no extra cost to Pixel owners and can be downloaded on the Pixel 7 and newer Pixel phones. So, it goes without saying, but if you’re using something else, like a Samsung Galaxy or Motorola, you’ll have to give a third-party VPN a try.
