When Google Glass first made its debut, it caused quite a stir, giving us a glimpse at the potential future. It’s been a little over a decade since its release, and new devices have started to hit the market, hoping to succeed where Glass failed. Meta has had a decent amount of success with its smart glasses, but it’s still too early to know just how much these types of devices will take off.
Of course, even with social media at its peak and digital surveillance becoming more of the norm for most people, folks are still wary about smart glasses. While Meta does a pretty good job of letting people know when its glasses are recording, some would say that it’s not enough. And if you’re looking for a solution, there’s now an app for that.
This could be good?
There’s no telling where smart glasses will end up, but one thing is for certain, this is just the start. While Meta is the front-runner right now, there have been rumors of brands like Samsung and Apple also diving into the space. And as more and more brands get into the mix, some people might want to get a heads-up that there are smart glasses around them.
With that said, 404 Media highlights an app that’s available on the Google Play Store that can detect and notify you when smart glasses are around you. This is an independent project that’s also available on GitHub. The app is simple, yet effective, detecting Bluetooth signals from smart glasses, which then show as a notification on your phone.
The author of the app, Yves Jeanrenaud, states that the detection distance can even be customized. Of course, there’s always the chance that it might detect something other than smart glasses, so this is something that you’ll need to keep an eye on. If you’re curious about this, you can download the app and give it a try.
This app will only be able to warn you about smart glasses in your area. From there, it’s up to you how you take action. If you’re dreadfully concerned about this, there’s a good chance that you’ll just leave the area. However, there’s always a chance that your new location could also have smart glasses in the vicinity.
All jokes aside, privacy concerns are legitimate, especially when the data captured by these glasses is being used in all kinds of ways without our consent. While it’s becoming more normal to be under surveillance, maybe there will be a proper solution introduced by manufacturers that will solve this smart glasses problem.
