Back in July last year, Google’s standout learning tool gained a feature that built upon its viral Audio Overviews tool.
Up until then, users had been able to use NotebookLM to transform their research into narrated podcast-like spoken dialogue discussion between AI hosts. This worked well for users who better learned new topics when they ‘heard’ them, instead of reading them.
Then, NotebookLM made the feature even better.
Google supercharged the platform with ‘Video Overviews,’ which adds a visual element to learning new topics. Now, Google is rolling out a subsequent upgrade to NotebookLM’s video-generating capabilities with ‘Cinematic Video Overviews.’
Up until now, Video Overviews mainly generated slide-based animations. With Cinematic Video Overviews, the platform can now generate “unique, immersive videos tailored to you.”
The tool leverages Google’s content generation stack, including Gemini 3, Nano Banana Pro and Veo 3 to generate fluid animations and visuals.
“Gemini now acts as a creative director, making hundreds of structural and stylistic decisions to best tell the story with your sources. It determines the best narrative, visual style and format, and even refines its own work to ensure consistency,” according to Google.
So essentially, Gemini lays down the groundwork and plans a cohesive narrative. Nano Banana Pro generates assets to depict the research, and Veo 3 brings everything to life.
As is the case with most new advanced Gemini features, Cinematic Video Overviews are limited to English Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US, at least for now. If and when it expands to other regions and users on lower tiers remains to be seen.
If you’re an eligible user, you can try out the new feature on the web and on mobile now.
