It turns out that Motorola is dominating the US foldable phone market

Every year, it’s pretty much the same story. A few brands in the US unveil new foldables, but it’s always Samsung that makes the most noise surrounding its release, no doubt spending a huge amount on advertisements and promotional opportunities. Because of this, we get the impression that the brand is doing well, and that it’s even the top foldable phone manufacturer in the US.

However, that doesn’t seem to be the case, apparently, with International Data Corporation (IDC) reporting that Motorola is, in fact, the top foldable phone manufacturer in the US, with a staggering 50% market share. This detail has surfaced in a new video posted by Francisco Jeronimo, who is the vice president of devices for IDC(via 9to5Google).

A bit of a surprise to be honest

When it comes to global metrics, Motorola holds a 14% market share, which is quite impressive, considering their low-key presence and its limited releases. As you can imagine, these numbers come as a bit of a shock, considering that Motorola isn’t exactly the first brand that you think about when talking about foldable phones.

Samsung has dominated the space, or so we thought, since the first Galaxy Z Fold released back in 2019. Since that time, the brand has slowly and steadily refined its lineup, delivering some of the best devices that you can buy. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 shocked consumers with its sleek design, offering one of the thinnest profiles of any foldable on the market.

Motorola has approached things differently

Motorola, on the other hand, has only produced clamshell foldables in the past, and only recently introduced a tablet-style foldable during Mobile World Congress. This phone does not have a release date, but is set to make its retail debut sometime in 2026. It’s actually quite amazing when you think about it.

Motorola has never released a tablet-style foldable and yet still dominates market share in the US with a staggering 50%. Naturally, the brand has done a great job of offering hardware that looks and feels good, while also keeping costs down. The brand has done a great job offering a wide range of products at a number of different price points.

It does this by retaining its older foldable devices in its lineup, offering affordable options to those that are looking. It’ll be interesting to see just how successful the Razr Fold will be. Motorola has yet to announce an official release date or even a price for its upcoming tablet-style foldable. If it manages to undercut the competition, there’s a good chance that it could become the top foldable in 2026.

The only question that remains is: are consumers interested? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
