It took a few years, but it seems like foldable phones are now reaching a tipping point, with brands eliminating the problems that prevented a lot of people from buying into the product category. The devices are nearly as thin as traditional slab phones, and it looks like the problem with the screen crease is all but over.
So, it becomes only natural that brands are starting to move on to what’s next, introducing the next evolution with trifold products. Huawei has been doing it for a couple of years, and Samsung just introduced its first trifold phone to market as well. While that phone might be discontinued, the brand is already reportedly prepping for what comes next.
A successor and something different
Samsung hasn’t been shy about giving new technologies a try, which is why it was the first company to formally introduce a foldable phone to retail in the US. Since then, it has iterated and made improvements, while also testing a thinner foldable phone, along with an ultra-thin slab model with the Galaxy S25 Edge.
So while the Galaxy Z TriFold might be done and over with, that doesn’t mean that new things aren’t coming. According to a post on Naver, Samsung is already working on a follow-up, which could arrive sometime in 2027 (via 9to5Google). It’s quite obvious that behind the scenes, Samsung is working to improve the technology behind its trifold display.
And naturally, at some point, there’s going to be an improved successor that will come to market. According to the post, the new model could be lighter, and the machine translation could be wrong here, but also thicker. Perhaps what’s more interesting is that the report also sheds light on a new sliding phone that will arrive sometime in the next few years.
Samsung showed off a prototype of this phone at Mobile World Congress, and it looks quite interesting. Unlike Lenovo’s prototype, Samsung’s will require users to manually slide the phone up to reveal more screen real estate. Those looking for a compact phone that still offers plenty of screen will no doubt have their eyes on this one.
The details are pretty scarce at the moment, but at the very least, the production model will reportedly be thinner than what was seen at Mobile World Congress. Naturally, we’ll just have to wait and see whether any of this materializes. It makes sense, especially from what we already know. Let’s hope that Samsung has some interesting products in the pipeline.
