Samsung’s Galaxy S27 series is still a little under a year away at this point, but we’re already starting to hear leaks and rumors, followed by subsequent leaks and rumors that dispel the early leaks and rumors.
After reportedly flirting with a new display tech that would eliminate the under-display S Pen digitizer, Samsung is reportedly walking back on its plan.
Reports coming out of Korea, via ETNews, suggest that the change would have allowed Samsung to shave an additional 0.3mm off of the Galaxy S27 Ultra’s chassis.
The change made sense, considering the South Korean tech giant has been chasing slim designs across its lineup. However, considering how important the S Pen is to the Ultra line’s identity, Samsung didn’t want to risk the pen’s functionality either.
Sticking with the tried-and-tested
I found out if Samsung’s S Pen is still the only real choice for stylus fans
Can OnePlus challenge the S Pen?
For reference, if Samsung had gone through with the change, it would have moved to an Active Electrostatic (AES) system. This would have required the S Pen itself to carry a built-in battery, making it thicker and potentially less convenient to use.
Sporting a built-in battery right within the pen can introduce more complications, like potential battery failures and the need to develop workflows to solve said failures.
In addition to that, Samsung has realized that the hype surrounding thin phones has mostly died down, and with the company even winding down Edge-related operations, striving for thinness isn’t its main focus.
Those two facts alone were enough to convince the tech giant to stick with the regular S Pen. So no, the Galaxy S27 Ultra might not be the thinnest flagship of 2027, but it sure will retain the full functionality of its S Pen.
