In most popular music streaming apps, the algorithm plays a big role in helping you find the type of songs you might like. This is precisely the reason you must influence the algorithm to break free from your taste bubble and discover a new genre of music. While this is a highly effective trick, the streaming giant has other smart features to help you find new music.
On top of those existing features, Spotify has launched another that helps users find their next favorite tracks. The company is officially calling the feature “SongDNA” because it literally dives that deep into a song, revealing the people and “creative connections” behind your favorite tracks.
Spotify’s new SongDNA feature wants to provide users with an ‘immersive music experience’

Spotify’s new SongDNA appears as a card in the Now Playing view. Tapping on the card reveals key information related to the track you are currently listening to, including the writers, producers, and collaborators of the song. According to the company’s official blog post, the SongDNA card also displays ‘samples and interpolations that shaped its sound,’ and allows users to ‘browse the covers it inspired.’
Moreover, it will display other music creators they collaborated with in the past. You will be able to tap any of those creators and discover more songs from them. It also shows which collaboration worked out the best so far for a particular music artist, and the number of songs they collaborated on when you tap the creator.
It’s easy to use the SongDNA feature. All you have to do is play a song, open the Now Playing view, and scroll down to find the SongDNA beta card. Spotify believes that this brings a ‘new dimension’ to music discovery, as it turns songs into an ‘exploratory experience.’ However, SongDNA may still not work as smoothly as you’d expect.
SongDNA may not meet your expectations every time, as it’s available as a beta feature. However, it worked on our devices as smoothly as we’d like. It doesn’t mean you need to be a beta tester to test it as we did.
Spotify Premium users globally on iOS and Android can now try the SongDNA feature on their phones. If you are still not seeing it despite being a Premium subscriber, wait until it becomes available to all Premium users by the end of April this year.
