What makes it unapproachable is the initial curve. This is the Dark Souls of multiplayer shooters, without being a simulator like experience. You can lose everything very fast if you don’t take risks strategically. But, once you understand the game, you know how to bounce back quickly, too.
People bought Elden Ring in droves , even though it was unapproachable. But people understood the point of their challenge from Dark Souls 1-3. Marathon is just still trying to explain what it is to the market.
For anybody that hated CoD’s inclusion of perks like Martyrdom to make it easier for people to get kills, this game is for you. The kills are always fair, because the gunplay is perfectly balanced.
Playing solo it is the multiplayer equivalent of Alien Isolation. Playing with peers it becomes Halo’s gunplay crossed with R6’s high stakes.
This is a game for those that hate any game that caters to the lowest common denominator. I hated CoD’s Martyrdom perk because it catered to noobs, and Marathon avoids any such mechanics. I love that it is trying to be something by different, because it very much succeeds.
