Gemini Live just killed boring news briefs

Asking your favorite AI assistant for news has often felt a little dry. Take Google’s Gemini Live, for example.

When asked about the latest going on around the world, the conversational AI tool often resorts to just reading out headlines. The tool gave you the ‘what,’ but not the ‘when,’ ‘where,’ ‘why,’ ‘who,’ and ‘how.’

That, however, is about to change now.

Google is quietly working on a big upgrade for Gemini Live

It’s getting a lot smarter

Gemini’s latest upgrade gives Gemini Live the ability to deliver better news briefs. The development was shared by the tech giant in a new support post that focuses on “what’s new in Google Home,” via Android Authority.

Dated March 31, the release notes have a small excerpt about the Gemini Live update right at the bottom.

Get news when you go live:

News summaries in Gemini Live are now deeper and more interactive. Try asking “What’s the latest news?” or “Catch me up on tech news” during a Live conversation to get detailed updates. You can even ask follow-up questions to dive deeper into a story.

Now, when you ask Gemini Live to give you the latest news, instead of giving you simple headlines, the tool will give you detailed news summaries. Of course, said summaries won’t be too long, but you’ll have the option to tell the AI agent to expand on a specific story.

You’ll also have the option to interrupt the AI agent if you hear something you want to know more about. So, for example, if Gemini Live is telling you about the conflict in Iran, you can interrupt it and pose a question like, “How is the market reacting to that?”

The update is live for me on the Gemini app for iOS, but not on the Android equivalent. Is Gemini Live giving you smarter news brief replies? Let us know in the comments below!
