If you’re a Google Fi customer, you’re not normally used to service disruptions. And if the service has felt a little off lately, it is because there’s actually something wrong this time around.
The MVNO, which uses the T-Mobile network for connectivity, is giving users a “SIM card is no longer active” error message or a persistent SOS icon.
Google Fi: What plans does it offer and how can I subscribe?
Google’s MVNO isn’t for everyone, but it can offer substantial savings
The issue first emerged on Tuesday night, as pointed out by AndroidCentral. Reports about the issue seemingly peaked around 7:15pm last night, and have since subsided.
When rampant, the malfunction reportedly nuked mobile data for all affected eSIM and physical SIM users.
Google has known of the issue since. It subsequently updated its support page to highlight a troubleshooting step. “Due to a high number of contacts, wait times are longer than normal. If you are experiencing an issue where your SIM card is no longer active, skip the wait times and follow the steps outlined here to resolve,” reads the page.
If you’re facing the issue, following these steps should offer immediate relief:
- Be connected to Wi-Fi, on your phone, open the Google Fi app.
- Go to the homepage.
- Scroll to the “International features” section.
- Under “International features,” turn OFF “Service outside the US” (or “Service in Canada & Mexico”).
- Wait for a few seconds.
- Turn back ON.
- Restart the phone.
Comments on Reddit and Downdetector suggest that the simple troubleshooting steps successfully fix the issue. It’s worth noting that even though this isn’t affecting everybody, it isn’t an isolated incident either. An exact cause of the outage hasn’t been shared yet. The issue doesn’t seem to stem from T-Mobile.
