Yahya Abdul-Mateen II draws a portrait of Jimmy Fallon, talks Morpheus and ‘The Matrix Resurrections’

The world of The Matrix is returning to cinemas this month, with the highly-anticipated sequel, The Matrix Resurrections, releasing on Dec. 22. While original cast members Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back, there are a slew of new stars taking on major roles. Among them is Candyman and Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, taking on the coveted role of Morpheus, made iconic by Laurence Fishburne.

But before he launched a big-screen career, the actor studied architecture and worked as a city-planner in San Francisco. Those days may be behind him, but he still draws, “to keep that muscle going.”

So, on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon decided to put the multitalented actor to the test, pulling out paper and markers and requesting a 15-second portrait of himself. Abdul-Mateen put some rules in place for Fallon, though, making him show off his artistic skills, too.

“We gotta keep eye contact the entire time,” he said. “Just let your hand follow your eye.”

The drawing exercise resulted in lots of scribbles, singing, and giggling. The results? Not exactly museum-worthy, but we have to hand it to them anyway. Art is subjective, after all.

The Matrix Resurrections comes to cinemas and HBO Max on Dec. 22.
