Apple launches AirTag app, Tracker Detect, on Android

TL;DR

  • Apple’s new AirTag app for Android, called Tracker Detect, helps you keep track of nearby AirTags.
  • Users can scan for nearby devices compatible with Apple’s Find My network to see if they’re being tracked.
  • Tracker Detect is available for free in the Google Play Store.

Apple’s AirTag item trackers can be a double-edged sword. They’re extremely reliable and accurate item trackers, so clipping them onto your important items almost ensures you’ll never lose things like your wallet or keys. But they can also be used maliciously. If someone wants to track your whereabouts, they can throw one into your bag or purse, and you might never know it’s there.

The app is simple. Once you agree to the terms, tap the Scan button to look for nearby devices. The app will scan for about a minute. If it senses a nearby AirTag or other Find My-compatible device that could be registered to another owner, it’ll show “Unknown (device name)” along with the last time the device was found. You can either learn more about the item tracker, find out how to disable it (which includes instructions on how to remove its battery), or have the tracker play a sound if it’s been nearby for 10 minutes.

Don’t confuse this app with an actual AirTag app, though. To use and track your own AirTags, you’ll need an iPhone. The Tracker Detect app for Android only scans for AirTags and other Find My devices separated from their original owner. It’s a safety measure, not a full-fledged AirTag-tracker app.

Regardless, if you sense your location is being tracked, download the free Tracker Detect app at the link below to start scanning.
