Toyota teases its upcoming electric pickup

On Tuesday, at an event in Japan, Toyota once again spoke about its grand plans for battery-powered vehicles. Akio Toyoda, global president of Toyota Motor Corporation, said that the company plans to offer 30 BEV models in all segments, across the Toyota and Lexus brands by 2030, with more on the way.

By that time, Toyota plans to sell 3.5 million electric cars per year; to achieve this goal, the company will invest roughly $70 billion globally in electrified vehicles.

Toyota supported these plans with a room full of electric and hybrid concept vehicles. The one that’s probably the most interesting, spotted by Electrek, is an electric pickup truck, unceremoniously tucked into a corner. Toyota didn’t reveal any details about this particular car, but it looks like a direct competitor to Rivian’s R1T and Ford’s upcoming F150 Lightning, and with Toyota’s expertise in making great pickups, it could be a very interesting car.

As for when we can expect this car to hit the market, it probably won’t happen very soon. Despite its early dominance in hybrid vehicles, Toyota currently only has one electric vehicle available for pre-order, a futuristic SUV called the Toyota bZ4X, coming next year. A recent report also said the company plans to launch an affordable electric car in China in late 2022.

Other interesting concepts Toyota has brought to the event include a cute compact cruiser (above) and a massive bZ SUV (below).
