Samsung has been using a 108MP camera on its top-end Galaxy Ultra phones since 2020’s Galaxy S20 Ultra, delivering both pixel-binned 12MP shots for reduced noise and full-resolution 108MP snaps for increased detail.
In any event, the outlet apparently unearthed strings referencing the new feature, with one string confirming that the mode will allow you to “capture even more detail.” It’s believed that the function will only be available when the 108MP shooting option is chosen, but when would you want to use it?
S22 Ultra to take better macro shots?
The outlet speculates that the detail enhancer feature could deliver more detailed macro shots. However, it’s worth noting that large 108MP sensors seen on the likes of the Galaxy S21 Ultra don’t allow you to get very close to a subject, forcing you to either crop in from the main camera or to switch to the ultrawide lens instead. So Samsung might need to combine data from the 108MP and ultrawide cameras if this is meant to significantly enhance macro shot detail (or it could theoretically use super-resolution via the 108MP camera alone).
What if the detail enhancer isn’t for macro shots though? Well, we’re guessing that this could just enhance 108MP pictures in general then, using multi-frame processing and other software techniques. So images of landscapes, pets, people, and more could have more resolvable detail as a result.
It’s believed that the feature is only coming to the Galaxy S22 Ultra for now, but we hope Samsung brings it to the likes of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and Galaxy S21 Ultra.
