Director Paul Feig Criticizes Sony For Excluding 2016 Ghostbusters Film In Franchise Box Set

Director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) took to Twitter to push back against Sony’s upcoming eight-disc, franchise box set the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection, which noticeably excludes his divisive 2016 Ghostbusters gender-swapped reboot.

Feig’s film starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. On social media, Feig offered that the studio must have made a “mistake,” and that the film deserved inclusion because it “won the Kids Choice Award for Best Feature Film the year it came out.” You can read his full response below.

As of this writing, representatives from Sony have not issued a response. Fans have speculated that because the film takes place in a different universe and is therefore not “canon,” that could be a contributing factor to its exclusion. The Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection has the original 1984 film Ghostbusters, its 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II and the newly released Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which hit theaters in November.

The box set is scheduled to be released on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K on February 1 and is currently available for pre-order. That release date is intended to also coincide with the planned February 1 release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. An Afterlife sequel is already in the works.
