Telegram adds spoiler formatting, reactions in final 2021 feature update

TL;DR

  • Telegram is squeezing in one last feature update this year.
  • The patch brings spoiler text formatting, message reactions, and more.

Telegram gained an update earlier this month, which brought privacy improvements and nifty message deletion smarts. However, it seems the chat app isn’t entirely done with the December feature dump. In the final update of 2021, the app is rolling out a host of additional enhancements.

The most notable addition is message reactions, which lets users respond to select texts with emoji in a Slack or Discord-like fashion. Users can Double-tap a message to send a thumbs-up emoji or tap once to access more. The feature is now always on in private chats but can be switched on by admins of group chats and channels.

For those conversing with users in multiple languages, you can now directly translate text within Telegram. You will need to enable this feature, though. Head to Settings > Language to access it, and adjust translate button settings.

Finally, Telegram is rolling out special spoiler formatting allowing users to obfuscate text until a recipient taps on it. It’s particularly useful to hide movie, show, or sport result details. Users can tap and highlight the portion of text they wish to format and tap the Spoiler button.

The features are now live on Telegram version 8.4 on Android. You can grab it using the button below.
