Ghost of Tsushima is excellent, and I haven’t played Days Gone, but it does come across as unreasonable to say that one was necessarily or objectively mediocre or worse than the other.
Ghost of Tsushima was really something of a breath of fresh air in what has increasingly become a western industry. Compare that with a zombie apocalypse title, of which there is no shortage. Industry is littered with them. It’s fair to suggest it was overlooked, in part, for that reason. The premise doesn’t really grab you the way Ghost does, even at a glance. If you were to read the descriptions for both games, one of them sounds fascinating and the other feels a little too familiar.
Again though, that doesn’t really speak to the quality of a game. You can go on metacritic and such, but that’s really a collective of “professional” opinions. That’s not a problem per se, just that I suspect many didn’t give it a chance for that reason (another reason for the sales). I’m sure I would like Ghost of Tsushima more than Days Gone, but I can’t say that without having played both with a straight face. Perhaps you can, but even then, anecdotes mate.
