The Suunto 5 Peak is the company’s lightest ever watch

TL;DR

  • The Suunto 5 Peak is one of the company’s lightest GPS watches to date.
  • It can track over 80 sports modes and last up to 100 hours in tracking mode.
  • The watch is now available for pre-order for $329.

Suunto has made consistently reliable GPS watches for years, and one of its most popular offerings is getting a nice upgrade.

The Suunto 5 Peak is one of the company’s lightest-ever GPS sports watches. While it bears the Suunto 5 moniker, it really looks nothing like the original Suunto 5 — that’s because the new model omits the Suunto 5’s bulky GPS “nose,” allowing for a thinner overall design. It’s 41% lighter than the original Suunto 5, weighing only 39g.

Despite its thinner overall design, the Suunto 5 Peak can last quite a long time on a charge. It can last up to 10 days in “time mode,” or two days shorter than the original Suunto 5. There are three battery modes to choose from when it comes to sports tracking: Performance, for up to 20 hours of continuous usage; Endurance, for up to 40 hours of usage; and Tour, which allows for 100 hours of continuous GPS usage.

You can track over 80 sports modes with the Suunto 5 Peak. Throughout the day, the watch will track your steps, resting and active heart rate, caloric burn, recovery, and sleep quality and duration. It also comes with Suunto’s recent Burner feature, which estimates the grams of carbs and fat burned during a workout.

It wouldn’t be a Suunto watch without the company’s heat and 3D maps, both of which are included on the Suunto 5 Peak. In our Suunto 7 review, we loved that the heatmaps feature could help users find popular, safe routes in a pinch. To date, we still consider this one of the main reasons to buy a Suunto watch.

You can choose from six different strap colors, including a speckled option that’s made out of recycled strap scraps. It’s available for pre-order now from Suunto.com for $329 in the US and Canada. It’ll officially go on sale February 1.
