Netflix better hold on to that Witcher series(and Cavill, because without him, it isn’t good), because they are looking a tad stale lately behind HBO Max and Disney +.
Netflix started from a monopoly of this space, Microsoft doesn’t get that luxury, so IMO, gamepass may look at the netflix model and see that the market leader is less and less ubiquitous, despite starting from an arguably much stronger position. Competition already exists in gaming….and the traditional gaming model is hardly being disrupted like streaming did to dvds.
It is hilarious to me that they play this rental model up, while with the left hand buying up studios to bolster the only thing that ever mattered and what we have been telling the only thing that ever mattered was for years. GAMES and EXCLUSIVES. The subscription model is just a way for businesses to suck up your money because they know you are too lazy to cancel. What is this gamepass without the buyouts? If the buyouts happened anyway, under a traditional gaming platform, would gamepass have really mattered much? I mean, when you buy up all the popular studios, does it really matter if you are selling or renting the games? Why are you cheering your game rental business when it is only successful because of the exclusive games you have been missing for generations? Shouldn’t the publishers/developers/games, and not gamepass itself, get all this credit? Exclusives matter and games matter. That’s it. Xbox bought a lot of exclusive content, give credit where credit is due, this success is from content acquisitions.
