TL;DR

  • A high-ranking Samsung executive has apologized for the Galaxy S22 throttling controversy.
  • He also said Samsung will add new features to prevent overheating.

Samsung was mired in controversy earlier this month thanks to a throttling saga. It emerged that the Galaxy S22 series of phones significantly throttled performance in games via so-called GOS software, but that the software couldn’t be disabled. The phones didn’t throttle benchmark apps though, with popular benchmark app Geekbench later removing the S22 series from its rankings.

Now, Samsung Electronics vice chairman and co-CEO Han Hong-hee has apologized for the performance throttling, The Korea Herald reported.

“We were unable to properly consider our consumers’ needs,” Han was quoted as saying while bowing deeply in apology at a shareholder meeting.

“The GOS was designed to optimize the phone’s performance considering the diverse characteristics of gamers,” Han reportedly added.  “The device’s consistent performance is crucial when enjoying high-end games so we limited the performance of CPU and GPU to the appropriate levels to minimize overheating while maintaining consistency.”

Samsung has already acted in the days following the controversy, pushing out an update to the S22 series that introduces a performance priority option in the Game Booster suite. The update also disables CPU and GPU throttling in the “early stages” of gameplay. But should you be worried about safety issues after this update due to overheating?

“We will secure safety using a heat control algorithm. We will continue to add new functions to prevent overheating,” the Samsung executive reportedly answered.
