The Batman Passes $500 Million At Global Box Office

The Batman has generated $505.8 million at the global box office, according to Deadline. As the world is navigating and imagining what a post-COVID life may be like, the DC blockbuster is the eighth film since theaters reopened and the fifth from Hollywood to crack the impressive half-billion mark.

This news hardly comes as a shock as earlier this week it was reported that in its second week, The Batman was again No. 1 in box office. At just over $500 million, it is the fourth highest-grossing studio release of the pandemic era.

Although critics were polarized by the superhero movie, audience turnout has remained strong–and no doubt helped by Pixar and Disney’s pivoting Turning Red’s March 11 theatrical release for Disney+ instead. The Batman cost roughly $200 million to produce–not including the ongoing marketing play–which means the film is charting a course to an overall strong and profitable showing. It also bears repeating that the film’s three-hour runtime has apparently not deterred fans–nor has AMC, Regal, and Cinemark’s last-minute addition of increasing ticket prices. Even one reported incident of a live bat being set loose in a theater as a “prank” has not kept fans away.

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet the Apes) and stars Robert Pattinson as Batman. The rest of the cast includes Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon.

Here at GameSpot, we scored the film a 6/10 in our The Batman review. Reviewer Mason Downey wrote, “This is a Gotham that is both familiar and new, grounded and somehow completely bizarre. If The Batman has one major masterstroke that should be replicated in future live-action adaptations, this is it.”
