Created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner and later bought by the New York Times in a seven-figure deal, Wordle has made five-letter words a bigger deal than four-letter ones in 2022, and inspired countless clones and variations on the basic guessing-game format. A common word, but this is one of those especially brutal Wordles where you can get all but one letter in place early and still X out (i.e. use up all your guesses) just trying to get the last one. There are at least eight five-letter words that end in OUND — meaning you could have locked in four green squares in a super lucky first guess and still not managed to get a fifth.
So if you resorted to checking the Wordle clues or answer here for a little help, who could blame you? It’s a cold world out there, and the English language is chaos.
