Both companies are making development easier. The MS use of DirectX Ultimate will make things much easier for developers to go from PC to Series X, the use of existing 3D audio will also help. Microsoft DirectStorage, part of Velocity Architecture, is also coming to PC to make things easier for developers. https://www.pcworld.com/art…
““By unifying the graphics platform across PC and Xbox Series X, DX12 Ultimate serves as a force multiplier for the entire gaming ecosystem,” Microsoft’s announcement post says. “No longer do the cycles operate independently! Instead, they now combine synergistically: when Xbox Series X releases, there will already be many millions of DX12 Ultimate PC graphics cards in the world with the same feature set, catalyzing a rapid adoption of new features” https://www.pcworld.com/art…
While SSD utilization may not require much work for devs, other systems may require some effort. “Sony is hoping that by offering developers less compute units running at a variable (and higher) clock rate, the company will be able to extract better performance out of the PS5. The reality is that it will REQUIRE DEVELOPERS TO DO MORE WORK TO OPTIMIZE games for the console until we can find out how it compares to the (more powerful on paper) Xbox Series X.” https://www.theverge.com/20…
Each console will require specific optimizations. We have yet to hear about what is required of the Series X SSD on the part of the developers.
