You want way more storage on your TV box

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

Xiaomi announced a rather interesting streaming box in China last week when it revealed the Mi Box 4S Max in the market. The most noteworthy feature here is the expanded RAM and storage allocation, offering 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

It almost goes without saying that 64GB of storage is very rare in the streaming box space, as many devices opt for 8GB instead. That got us thinking about the ideal amount of storage readers want in a streaming TV device. We posted a poll last week, and here’s how you answered it.

How much storage do you want on your TV box?

Results

Just over 1,700 votes were counted after we posted the poll a few days ago, and the results show that respondents clearly want more storage than they’re currently getting. The most popular pick was “256GB or more,” with 26.21% of polled readers choosing this option.

In other words, roughly two-thirds of all polled readers want 64GB of storage or more in their TV boxes. This suggests that streaming TV box makers like Google, Nvidia, and Xiaomi need to up the ante in this department. Of course, some of these manufacturers are able to achieve their low prices at least partly due to skimping on storage. But here’s hoping these brands introduce higher-end options with more internal storage.

Bringing up the rear in this poll were 32GB (16.46%), 16GB (9.24%), and 8GB (6.65%). These three options combined accounted for just under a third of the votes. It suggests that there are still some readers who are happy with their allocated internal storage or are willing to tolerate a meager amount of internal storage if storage expansion is an option.

  • kid_1230: i dislike my Chromecast with google tv so i got a 64gb 4k apple tv I believe it has 3gb of ram 😀 super fluid zero hiccups.. ccggtv is laggy and slow and takes a while to do anything. dont get me started with the ram and storage.
  • Shizuma: 256gb or more, but that’s mainly because my streaming TV box is a Nvidia shield TV which operates as a Plex server so I need lots of room for that.
  • Shubham: Being able to download torrents on TV might not be a bad idea
  • Joe Black: “How much storage do you want on your TV box?” I pretty much do not care – I stream, or I have USB HDD and NAS connected to my Shield.
