TL;DR

  • WhatsApp has added the ability to control who can see a user’s profile.
  • The feature is a welcome privacy improvement for the messaging app.

WhatsApp has added a welcome new privacy feature, giving users the ability to control who can see their profile.

WhatsApp made the announcement via Twitter:

🔒 To further protect your privacy online, we’re rolling out new options to your privacy control settings 🔒

Now you can select who from your contact list can see your Profile Photo, About, and Last Seen status. For more information follow this link: https://t.co/UGMCx2n70h

Customers interested in changing their settings should follow these steps for Android. Essentially, you head to Settings > Account > Privacy.

In the subsequent screen, users can change who can see Last Seen, Profile Photo, About information, Status, and Read Receipts, as well as who can add them to groups.

Do note, though, that changing these settings can also affect how you see other profiles. If you turn off your Last Seen status, for example, you will not be able to see the Last Seen status of your contacts. Be sure you understand the caveats of each setting before you make the commitment.
