Samsung has dismissed suggestions that it would discontinue its Exynos chipset business, as rumors persist that the company will skip Exynos power for its flagship phones in 2023 and possibly 2024.
The company stated during its Q2 2022 conference call that “it is not true at all” that it will discontinue its Exynos business, the Korean Maeil Economic Daily reported.
“Currently, we are reorganizing our system-on-chip (SoC) business model, and are pursuing a plan to strengthen our competitiveness in the mid- to long-term,” the company explained.
“In particular, we are focusing on strengthening the competitiveness of the next-generation mobile Exynos, and we are trying to maximize the market share of major customers by strengthening cooperation with leading IP companies and starting early development,” the company added.
This statement comes a while after several outlets reported that Samsung was working on an ambitious custom SoC for Galaxy flagships. This chipset is purportedly coming out in 2025.
Possible trouble for Exynos?
A wild report out of Korea back in May alleged that Samsung would skip Exynos releases for Galaxy flagships in 2023 and 2024. Samsung would go on to issue a response at the time, saying “no specific decision has been made.” Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo partially corroborated the claim a few weeks ago, asserting that next year’s Galaxy S23 series would only be available with Snapdragon power.
Nevertheless, Samsung’s latest statement suggests that work is proceeding on next-generation Exynos processors but that it needs to overhaul the division to truly take the fight to the likes of Qualcomm and Apple.
It’s also interesting to note the company specifically talking about medium- and long-term outlooks as well as starting early development of chipsets. This perhaps adds fuel to those reports of an ambitious SoC coming in 2025.
