Twitter has increased the price of its subscription service, Twitter Blue

July 29, 2022

Twitter Blue has gotten pricier, and not by a small amount.

The monthly price for Twitter‘s subscription service has gone up from $2.99 to $4.99, a 67 percent increase. Twitter noted the change in an email sent to subscribers (via TechCrunch), where it said that “early adopters” will still be charged $2.99 until further notice. New subscribers, however, will have to pay $4.99 in the U.S. or an equivalent amount in other countries where Twitter Blue is available, namely Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

Twitter also updated the information in its Help Center to reflect the change.

Spoiler alert: Twitter is testing status updates again

“Twitter Blue subscriptions are paid on a monthly basis, and priced regionally based on the current US price of $4.99. If Twitter Blue is available for purchase in your area, you’ll find the regional currency price information wherever you sign up for your subscription,” the document says.

Twitter Blue was launched in June 2021, offering subscribers certain perks as well as early access to some upcoming features. These include Undo Tweet, Bookmark Folders, Custom App Icons, and Themes, though not all features are available on all platforms. For a full list of Twitter Blue features, go check out Twitter’s site.

We’ll see how well the change will sit with subscribers, given that the hefty price increase did not bring any immediately available new features.

It’s worth noting that Elon Musk, who wanted to buy Twitter before he stopped wanting to buy Twitter, laid out a plan for increasing Twitter’s user base, and raking in as much as $10 billion annually from subscriptions by 2028. Right now, the revenue from Twitter Blue is very far from those numbers; in its earnings report for second quarter of 2022, Twitter said that “subscription and other revenue” totaled a $101 million, a 27 percent year-over-year decrease.
