Since it was first teased last year at Meta’s Connect conference, we’ve been getting drip-fed information about the company’s high-end VR headset codenamed “Project Cambria.” Mark Zuckerberg has now confirmed that his company plans on releasing its next VR headset this October.
On a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Zuckerberg made an appearance at the former Fear Factor host’s studio. During the interview, Zuckerberg revealed that Meta’s next headset will be released in October.
“For the next device that’s coming out in October, there’s a few big features,” said Zuckerberg. Meta’s CEO then proceeded to talk about the device’s face tracking ability, allowing users to make eye contact, facial expressions, and more and have that translate to their avatar in real time.
As of this moment, no other headset on the market offers full face tracking like this. HTC does offer an accessory for its Vive headsets, but that only enables partial face tracking.
Although he doesn’t explicitly mention the name Project Cambria, how the device is described throughout the interview matches up with what is currently known about the headset. This includes a high-resolution screen, internal sensors for eye tracking, and sophisticated passthrough augmented reality.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Project Cambria may go by the name Meta Quest Pro. If the headset Zuckerberg is talking about is indeed the Meta Quest Pro, then the price of the headset coming out in October will be more expensive than the Quest 2, even after the Quest 2’s recent price hike.
Project Cambria is expected to be significantly more expensive than $800 according to UploadVR. This means its target audience is likely more for enthusiasts and developers. However, both Project Cambria and Quest 2 will sell along side each other and Meta will likely release a new generation of the more affordable Quest 2 in the near future.
