TL;DR

  • The new Netflix ad-supported plan could cost half of its current standard plan.
  • The company reportedly plans to show four minutes of ads for every one hour of content.
  • Ads will be placed at the beginning and in the middle of the content.

The publication reports that Netflix is mulling a subscription fee of $7 to $9 a month for its ad-supported tier. The lower monthly rate would reportedly come with four minutes of commercials per hour of content. Netflix will apparently show ads before and during some shows and movies, but not at the end.

The streamer doesn’t want to put audiences off with overwhelming ad spots.

People familiar with the company’s plans told Bloomberg that the streamer wants to make smaller deals with advertisers because it doesn’t want to put audiences off with overwhelming ad spots. It also doesn’t want to go heavy on targeted advertising, and most viewers should see the same ad. As previously announced, Microsoft will manage how people see commercials on the platform.

So when is Netflix’s ad-supported plan coming? As per the report, the service plans to introduce the cheaper subscription rate during the last three months of this year. Subscribers in at least six Netflix markets should be able to get onto the new plan. A full rollout is expected next year.

The company previously confirmed that not all of its content would be available on its ad-supported plan. You can expect to get all Netflix originals, but you may not have access to the entire catalog of licensed content.
