DC FanDome 2022 Has Been Canceled

DC’s FanDome event is a huge undertaking for the comic company, raking in tens of millions of views across 220 countries and in 12 languages. After just two years though, Warner Bros. Discovery appears to be putting the event on pause, if not canceling it for good, according to a statement from the company (via IndieWire)

“With the return of in-person events, Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to be able to engage with our fans live at numerous comic-cons around the world and will not be scheduling DC FanDome for 2022,” the company said in an official statement.

DC originally kicked the event off in 2020 as a way to connect to fans during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering an eight-hour live stream in the format of a virtual convention. The event featured announcements, panels with creators and actors, and fan-focused events. 2021’s viewership garnered “triple the fan traffic” of the 2020 show, according to a statement from Warner Bros. following the previous event.

The entire Warner Bros. empire, including DC, has been in the middle of a shakeup since the merger with Discovery concluded earlier this year, marked by the cancelation of the Batgirl film and many animated programs. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav promised to cut $3 billion in costs throughout the company as part of a recovery effort following the acquisition, and it seems FanDome is likely a casualty of that. Zaslav promised to “protect the DC brand” during a recent financial call, stating that the company has a 10-year-plan focusing on DC, “similar to the structure that Alan Horn and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Kevin Feige and Disney.”

While Batgirl has been canceled and effectively buried, still on the horizon for DC are Black Adam, The Flash, and the recently-delayed Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Harley Quinn was renewed for Season 4, and live-action series Titans, Peacemaker and Doom Patrol are currently set for Season 2 and Season 4 respectively–though with Batgirl’s cancelation, we’re not taking those as a given.
