Camera details for a second Pixel foldable may have leaked

TL;DR

  • Camera details relating to a second Pixel foldable have emerged online.
  • The foldable is tipped to offer a 64MP main camera, a 10.8MP tele lens, and a 12MP ultrawide shooter.

An enterprising developer dug through Google’s code earlier this year and discovered apparent camera details for new Pixel smartphones as well as a Pixel foldable. Now, the same developer has dug through the Android 13 QPR1 beta and discovered camera details related to a second Pixel foldable.

Developer Kuba Wojciechowski posted his findings on Twitter, noting that this second Pixel foldable is code-named Felix. He added that code related to this device includes folded and unfolded references as well as inner/outer cameras. So what should you expect in terms of camera hardware?

Well, Wojciechowski asserts that the rear camera system consists of a 64MP IMX787 main shooter, S5K3J1 telephoto sensor (10.8MP), and an IMX386 ultrawide camera (12MP). The inner camera is an 8MP IMX355 sensor (as seen on several previous Pixel devices), while the outer shooter is an S5K3J1 sensor. For what it’s worth, the IMX787 was previously seen on the likes of the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra.

We’re guessing this is a Fold-style foldable rather than a clamshell device, as most clamshell foldables (with the exception of the Huawei P50 Pocket) offer dual rear camera systems.

Nevertheless, the switch from the 50MP GN1 camera sensor to the IMX787 as the primary sensor is also interesting. Google adopted the GN1 for the Pixel 6 series after years of using the 12MP IMX363 sensor for the main shooter, and the Pixel 7 series is expected to maintain the GN1.

There’s no official word on whether this device will actually see the light of day, but Samsung could definitely do with foldable competition in global markets. After all, Huawei is the only other OEM that’s still releasing foldables outside China. So here’s hoping Google gives us a sneak peek at its October 6 event.
