Razer Edge 5G is a new Android gaming handheld with 5G support

TL;DR

  • Verizon, Razer, and Qualcomm have teamed up to create the Razer Edge 5G.
  • The Razer Edge 5G will allow you to download games, stream from your console, or play directly in the cloud.
  • The device will get further details on October 15.

While presenting at Mobile World Congress Las Vegas, Verizon made headlines when it announced a partnership between it, Razer, and Qualcomm. The partnership will bring about what Verizon claims is the world’s first Android-powered 5G gaming handheld — the Razer Edge 5G.

Mobile World Congress Las Vegas is one of the largest connectivity conferences in North America. Today, some of Verizon’s executives stepped on the stage to announce the Razer Edge 5G. The handheld is a joint effort with Razer and Qualcomm that Verizon says will get a full reveal at RazerCon on October 15.

Although Verizon is keeping details close to the chest for right now, the company did mention that the gadget will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 gaming platform. Verizon also says that the Razer Edge 5G will allow you to download games, stream from a console, or play directly on the cloud.

In late 2021, Qualcomm announced a similar all-in-one gaming device, however, it was just a prototype at the time without a name. The new device Verizon has announced today is likely the finalized version of the device Qualcomm announced last year.

It sure seems like the handheld gaming market is getting quite crowded these days. Now the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck have to deal with this new system and Logitech’s new streaming device — the Logitech G Cloud Gaming Handheld. Although Verizon and Logitech are creating new competition, it remains to be determined if these new handhelds can succeed in a space dominated by industry juggernauts like Nintendo and Valve.
