TL;DR

  • A teardown has revealed new details about what could be coming to Wear OS.
  • The teardown suggests Wear OS backups could include watch faces and tiles.
  • The teardown also suggests Google Wallet will get some new features.

A new APK teardown has given us details on what could be coming to Wear OS in the future, including backups for watch faces and tiles and new Google Wallet functionality.

Thanks to the people over at 9To5Google, we now have an idea of what’s to come to Wear OS down the road. In their APK teardown of the latest version of the OS, they found two notable details about Wear OS backups and Google Wallet.

As a side note, APK teardowns look into the lines code within an application that may contain details about potential future features. There are no guarantees that the company will actually release the features mentioned in the code.

Back in August, it was discovered in an APK teardown that Google may be working on pairing Wear OS watches with new phones less of a pain by allowing users to backup their data. It appears we may now know what those backups could include. According to 9To5Google, the backups may cover app data, settings, and watch faces and tiles.

This would mean that users can save settings like color, style, and app arrangement on your watch’s home screen. It would also save the order you have your tiles set in when swiping from left to right.

The other discovery was new functions for Google Wallet. 9To5Google found that Play services version 22.42.12 mentions transit, flight, and event alerts.

  • “Stay up-to-date with your transit activity. Find out when you’re running low on balance or your passes are about to expire.”
  • “Stay up-to-date on your events and flights, and find out when your saved offers are about to expire.”

At the moment, if you want to pair Wear OS watches with a new phone, it requires a factory reset. As you can imagine, this can be quite annoying. So, hopefully, Google will release these features and soon.
