What to expect from Xiaomi’s new skin

TL;DR

  • The Chinese MIUI 14 changelog has leaked online.
  • Xiaomi’s new update will offer plenty of performance and personalization tweaks.
  • Two notable features include Super Icons and pets or plants on your home screen.

Xiaomi was supposed to take the covers off the Xiaomi 13 series and MIUI 14 yesterday, but the company opted to delay the event. Fortunately, it looks like MIUI 14 info has nevertheless dropped via an unofficial source.

MIUI Polska writer Kacper Skrzypek uncovered a changelog for the Chinese version of MIUI 14, revealing a slew of additions and tweaks in the process. Check out his tweet and screenshot of the changelog below.

For starters, Xiaomi purportedly promises an improved system architecture, taking up less storage space, boosting app performance, and improving the gaming experience.

The company is also apparently offering a couple of quirky personalization options. This includes a “plant or pet to always wait for you on the home screen,” and Super Icons for your home screen. We’re guessing that the plant/pet feature is similar to the Pixel Pals app for iOS. As for Super Icons, it stands to reason these icons are akin to Nothing OS’s extra large app icons (dubbed Max Icons).

Other personalization-related options include new widget combos and home screen folders that let you access your most-needed apps with a single click.

What else should you know about MIUI 14?

Xiaomi is also purportedly touting cross-device connectivity with a few features. These additions include taking a phone call on a Xiaomi tablet, quickly pairing your earphones to your phone, tablet, or TV (and seamlessly switching between them), and automatic prompts for text entry on your phone when you need to enter text on your TV.

The Chinese brand is also readying a family services suite of features. This will allow you to create a group of up to eight people for photo album sharing, managing child accounts, and sharing health tracking data (sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring, etc).

Xiaomi is also apparently overhauling its Mi AI Assistant, as it can now filter spam calls, scan documents and real-world objects (e.g. plants), translate languages, and more.

Other notable features mentioned in the changelog include more advanced search functionality in settings (e.g. search history and categories), support for more wireless card readers, and boosting connection speeds using mobile data when your Wi-Fi connection is too weak.

There’s obviously no word on a rollout for MIUI 14 just yet, be it for Chinese or global users. In any event, it’s worth stressing once again that this is the Chinese version of the software. We’ll undoubtedly see some of these features on the global version, but we’re guessing that functions like family services and the Mi AI Assistant will be China-only.
