We’ve seen smartphone brands tout ever-increasing wattages for chargers over the last few years, going from 65W to 100W and even 150W. Now, as if these speeds weren’t enough, Realme has announced even faster speeds for an upcoming phone.
The Chinese brand revealed on Weibo that the upcoming Realme GT Neo 5 will offer 240W charging speeds. The company adds that this is the highest wattage supported by the USB-C interface.
Indeed, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced the USB PD 3.1 revision back in 2021. This revision enabled up to 240W of power over USB-C, up from the previous 100W limit.

There’s no official word on charging times for the Realme GT Neo 5 or battery capacity. But Oppo claimed that its 240W charging tech demonstrated last year can charge a 4,500mAh battery in just nine minutes. So we’re expecting similar results if Realme is indeed using Oppo’s technology.
Of course, there’s more to charging speeds than having a high wattage. Being able to sustain these watts for a long period of time is another challenge, and we’ve seen some brands only hitting their peak charging speeds for a brief period of time before dropping in a big way.
We’re also curious to hear about battery degradation when using 240W charging on the GT Neo 5. For what it’s worth, Oppo previously said you can expect a battery to degrade by 20% after 800 charging cycles when using its 240W solution.
