FX’s Alien TV Series Will Film This Year

At the Television Critics Association press tour, FX chairman of content and productions John Landgraf discussed the Alien series, from writer/producer Noah Hawley (Fargo). The show was originally announced in December 2020.

“That’s gearing up for production this year after [Hawley] completes production on the fifth season of Fargo,” Landgraf said.

At the TCA in 2021, Landgraf said that the series will be “grounded” and “very conscious” of the existing cinematic universe, “and while it has some flexibility, the aesthetic that was established by Ridley Scott and continued by James Cameron is a part of that universe.” By August last year, Hawley had turned in all the scripts for the limited series spin on the sci-fi franchise. But, aside from the series hewing closer to the first original films, that’s all Landgraf wanted to share.

Alien was originally slated to begin filming in 2021, but Hawley and FX mutually wanted to prioritize Season 5 of the anthology series Fargo. That itself was delayed as Hawley shifted focus during the pandemic to writing a novel. Season 4 of Fargo was memorable for comedian Chris Rock’s turn as a drama actor. Season 5 is set in the upper Midwest, and features Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh in lead roles.

In November 2022, Deadline reported that a seventh Alien movie is in development, with Devs star Fede Alvarez possibly in the cast. Alien: Covenant, the sixth entry in the franchise, hit theaters in 2017.
