TL;DR

  • Acclaimed director and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman shot a short film using only a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
  • The short is called Jackals & Fireflies and appears to center on a woman going through some sort of life change.
  • You can watch the trailer on this page.

There have been quite a few films shot on phones. However, in most cases, an iPhone is the cinematographer’s tool of choice for shooting.

It looks like Academy Award-winning screenwriter and acclaimed director Charlie Kaufman wants to buck that trend, though. Today, a trailer dropped for a short film directed by Kaufman, and it was shot using only a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. You can see the trailer above or check it out on YouTube.

The short appears to be about a woman going through some sort of life change. She mentions someone else in narration, but it’s not clear who it is. The film itself shows her in various scenarios with an ominous piano score going on in the background.

While the trailer doesn’t suggest anything groundbreaking happening, it does look pretty terrific. If you watched it before reading this article, you might have assumed it was shot using regular film equipment. However, when you start nitpicking, you can see there’s plenty of grain, especially during the low-light shots.

Still, it’s exciting that we’ll see something from such an acclaimed filmmaker shot with a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. It’s nice to know that not every film needs to be shot on an iPhone.

There is no specific release date for Jackals & Fireflies.
