Android’s competitor during week of May 29, 2020

iPhone SE lightning port 2

This week in Apple news we heard a rumor related to Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector. The big question is: will the iPhone 12 series have it? Some say Apple will ditch the port for USB-C and others say no. Read on to find out what one leaker has to say.

In other Apple news, we heard about some future health-related AirPods features. We also found out about a new jailbreak for iPhones, the popularity of the iPhone 11, and just how involved Samsung will be in the creation of the iPhone 12 series.

See the Apple news roundup below for all the latest.

The top Apple news stories of the past week:

  • iPhone 12 will probably still use the Lightning connector: While we (and the environment) hope that Apple will ditch the Lightning connector soon, it doesn’t seem that will happen for the iPhone 12. Instead, one semi-reliable leaker says that Apple will include Lightning on the iPhone 12 series before going port-less on future iPhones.
  • New sensors might be in future AirPods: According to a DigiTimes report, there could be some kind of ambient light sensors in future AirPods headphones. Theoretically, these sensors would allow AirPods to track certain health aspects; kind of like a fitness band, but for your ears.
  • Remember jailbreaking? It’s back: If you want to jailbreak your iPhone for some reason, an updated hack tool will help you out. Using unc0ver 5.0.0, you allegedly can jailbreak any iPhone you like, regardless of the model or iOS version. Honestly, though, if you’re jailbreaking iPhones in 2020, you should probably just move to Android.
  • The world’s most popular phone in Q1 2020 was an iPhone: The iPhone 11 — the cheapest entry in the 2019 lineup — is officially the world’s most popular phone for the first quarter of the year. In second place is the most popular Android phone in the world: the Samsung Galaxy A51.
  • The iPhone 12 will still have a lot of Samsung in it: Despite their apparent rivalry, Apple depends on Samsung for its OLED displays. Apple tries to diversify its supply portfolio as much as it can, but a new rumor suggests that roughly 80% of the OLED displays in the iPhone 12 lineup will come from Samsung.
  • The Chinese tablet market is now Huawei’s: Despite the iPad being pretty much the best tablet you can buy (come on, Android OEMs, step up your game!), there’s a new tablet king in China. For the first quarter of the year, it appears Huawei sold more tablets in China than Apple.
  • Need a $100 Lightning cable? Here you go: Popular electronics accessory maker Anker just launched a patently ridiculous product: a 24K gold-plated Lightning cable. It costs $100 and it ships with a gift box, travel pouch, welcome guide, and lifetime warranty. I guess if you’re ultra-wealthy this would be something you’d want.
