The Bose QuietComfort Ultra may rival the Sony WH-1000XM5

TL;DR

  • A leak indicates that Bose is working on a new set of Bluetooth headphones.
  • The headphones will be called Bose QuietComfort Ultra.
  • The QuietComfort Ultra is in early development.

Bose generally plays its cards close to its chest, but insider
Kuba Wojciechowski leaked a render of the Bose QuietComfort Ultra. The Ultra will support noise-cancelling. Little else is known about the product, except that it’s in the early stages of development.

Although plenty of question marks surround the Ultra, they will likely make their way to consumers this year. Bose has a history of releasing headphones every other year. Bose released the QuietComfort 45 in September 2021, and the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 came out in March 2019. Before that, the Bose QuietComfort 35 II hit the shelves in October 2017.

Bose’s noise-cancelling improves with every pair of headphones, and we expect the QuietComfort Ultra to follow suit. The headphone render appears to have a USB-C input on the right ear cup. The left ear cup has two buttons and Bose branding. It’s unclear if the Ultra will support touch controls along with buttons.

Thin seams separate the yoke from the headband, so the QC Ultra will be able to lay flat. There don’t appear to be hinges that let you fold the ear cups toward the headband as you can with the older Bose QC 35 II. The render depicts a plastic housing, which aligns with the QuietComfort series.

We don’t know what Bluetooth codecs the headphones will support, but if the QuietComfort 45 are any indication, the Ultra will have SBC and AAC. Based on the angle of the QuietComfort Ultra in the render, it’s unclear if the headphones will accept a standard 3.5mm input or if the only wired option will be USB-C.

We will update this article as more information comes out.
