It doesn’t take a genius to understand that game pass low entry fee isn’t what exactly what the developers get. They get a lump sum of money for putting their games on game pass. It varies depending on the game and the highest caliber games get the highest amount.
“This is why I don’t see a service like gamepass really working in the long term.”
It’s the opposite actually, as it the money they get for letting the game go on gamepass is a great safety net for them. And that’s not to take into consideration that the game will also be out physically and on Steam. Halo MCC was released on gamepass and steam, and the game still sold millions on Steam.
People only buy games they deem is worth the price and because of how expensive it is they have to be selective about it. You cant buy all the games you want in a year and some games aren’t going to make everyone day one purchase. One example is Control which didn’t even top the top 20 that month because people were unsure about it. Games like that would have benefited from gamepass….too bad Remedy’s publisher bet on the wrong horse by going with Sony and Epic store.
