Super Meat Boy Spin-Off Puzzle Game Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine Announced

Thunderful, Headup, and Team Meat have announced Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine, a spin-off game that takes place within the Super Meat Boy universe. It’ll come to PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S in 2023.

Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is a Puyo Puyo and Tetris-like puzzle game that includes traps like chainsaws, missiles, and other deadly hazards into the fray from Dr. Fetus. It features familiar levels from the Super Meat Boy and Super Meat Boy Forever locations, as well as over 100 hand-crafted levels for players to take on and beat.

The events of Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine take place right after those in Super Meat Boy Forever. He has collected a DNA sample of Meat Boy and wants to make clones of him, but since the sample isn’t perfect, the clones come out less than ideal. Through his levels and traps, Dr. Fetus will do away with the imperfect Meat Boy clones until he finds the perfect one.

“We’ve had a fantastic relationship with Team Meat going back over a decade and it’s been a real pleasure to take that to the next level and work in collaboration with them to create Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine,” explained Headup Head of Development Mark Aldrup in a press release. “Working together has allowed us to capture the hardcore essence of Meat Boy and bring it to a completely new genre to create a puzzle title unlike anything else out there.”

Super Meat Boy and Super Meat Boy Forever were hardcore platformers, so Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is tackling an entirely different genre. In GameSpot’s Super Meat Boy Forever review, we said, “It builds and pushes you through until you press every button perfectly. You just keep playing and trying and dying until you’ve had enough. And when you’re finally finished, if you’ve really put everything you had into the game, you might even feel a little runner’s high.”
