HBO is in the early stages of developing a new Game of Thrones prequel series about Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. Variety was first to report, and cited unnamed sources.
The show would follow Aegon and his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys as they use their dragons and army to conquer six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros, with the exception of Dorne. Aegon I would become the first king of Westeros and sit on the Iron Throne, founding the Targaryen Dynasty. These events took place approximately 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
While no writer has been attached to the project yet, sources say that HBO is eager to move forward and has already begun the search for a writer. Additionally, there may be a feature film component to the project that would lead into the series, though plans are still being finalized.
This project would be the latest in a series of Westeros-based projects at HBO following the success of Game of Thrones. The only other project to have moved forward is House of the Dragon, which had its series premiere in August 2022 and has already been renewed for Season 2. Another Game of Thrones prequel, an abandoned pilot about the Long Night starring Naomi Watts, was ultimately scrapped in 2019.
A report in late March indicated that HBO might be aiming for a shorter second season of House of the Dragon than the 10-episode run of the first. That will reportedly fit the overall vision for the series, with the show’s creative team supposedly plotting out Season 3 already.
