19 years later, it looks like a sequel to Dodgeball is finally happening. After star Justin Long said it might be a possibility, Deadline now reports that Vince Vaughn will star in and probably produce a sequel. The movie is said to be in “early development” and will be written by Jordan VanDina (The Binge).
The much-quoted 2004 original was written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, but it’s unclear if he will come back for the sequel. There is no director attached as of yet.
Also unknown is who else might star in the movie beyond Vaughn. In addition to Vaughn and Long, the original Dodgeball starred Christine Taylor, Stephen Root, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman, Hank Azaria, Alan Tudyk, Missi Pyle, and the late Rip Torn.
As for the story, all that’s known so far is that the film–should it be made–will pick up after the Average Joes won the high-profile dodgeball tournament, defeating Stiller’s Globo Gym. Vaughn is said to have come up with the idea for the sequel.
Dodgeball made more than $168 million in theaters against a reported budget of $20 million. The film contains numerous standout scenes and memorable moments that have spawned such memes as “Bold move, Cotton” and quotes like, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.” Additionally, once a year, ESPN transforms its ESPN 2 network into ESPN 8 and airs unique sports like cherry pit spitting and stone skipping, among others, in an homage to the film.
Before this, Long said Vaughn had an idea for a Dodgeball sequel but wasn’t sure if it would move forward since Stiller might not have been sold on the idea.
